PRE-REQUISITES: Intro to Journalism Course, Application, Interview

This class is made up of first year staff and editors that work together to produce the monthly newspaper, distributed locally. The staff act as reporters, writers, designers, and photographers in order to create the paper and update its complementary web site vandegriftvoice.com.

Syllabus

This comprehensive course introduces students to the basics of publications before exploring subjects necessary for the production of the Vandegrift yearbook/newspaper such as the fundamentals of photography, parts of a yearbook, writing features, news articles, editorials, and secondary coverage. Additionally, students will operate in the publication office as if a part of a working newspaper/magazine staff. The students are expected to sell advertisements and the yearbook itself. They will have to design marketing materials in addition to spreads using Photoshop and InDesign. Students will learn how to be reporters with an emphasis on ethics and interview skills. Finally, the students will put all of these skills together to produce a final product in the Veteran yearbook and Voices Newspaper.
